BioSC Competence Platform Transform2Bio: Integrated Transformation Processes and their Regional Implementation - Structural Change from Fossil Economy to Bioeconomy

The goal of the sustainable bioeconomy is to ensure the well-being of present and future generations without exceeding the ecological limits of the Earth. To achieve this, fundamental transformations of existing resource systems, value networks, business models, infrastructures and governance systems are required. The recent decision by the German government to phase out coal is initiating a structural transformation in the Rhenish lignite mining area that offers a unique opportunity to analyze socio-technical dynamics and shape regional implementation options towards a regionally cohesive sustainable bioeconomy. To achieve this, the goal of Transform2Bio is to systematically identify transformation pathways. These transformation pathways must be simultaneously (a) desirable (from a sustainability perspective), (b) possible (from a techno-economic perspective), and (c) acceptable (from a stakeholder consensus perspective). In addition, as part of the multidimensional approach, an interactive stakeholder network, the Stakes2Bio Lab, will be established.
