To achieve this, fundamental transformations of existing resource systems, value networks, business models, infrastructures and governance systems are required. The recent decision by the German government to phase out coal is initiating a structural transformation in the Rhenish lignite mining area that offers a unique opportunity to analyze socio-technical dynamics and shape regional implementation options towards a regionally cohesive sustainable bioeconomy. To achieve this, the goal of Transform2Bio is to systematically identify transformation pathways. These transformation pathways must be simultaneously (a) desirable (from a sustainability perspective), (b) possible (from a techno-economic perspective), and (c) acceptable (from a stakeholder consensus perspective). In addition, as part of the multidimensional approach, an interactive stakeholder network, the Stakes2Bio Lab, will be established.

Runtime
September 2019 – August 2022

Funding
FOCUS FUND within the framework of the NRW strategy project BioSC - Phase2: Focus.
Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia

Project partner
RWTH Aachen - Chair of Operation Management
University of Bonn - Institute of Food and Resource Economics (ILR) / Center for Development Research (ZEF)
Forschungszentrum Jülich – IBG-2

Project Manager
Prof. Dr. rer. pol.
